Castle fun takes centre stage

Bereaved families came together to enjoy a special weekend in July at Very Special Kids in Malvern and Glen Osmond Farm in Woodend.

Commencing on Saturday morning for just for the siblings, it was a day of adventure and expedition at Very Special Kids, based around the theme of a Winter Hero Quest where the children found their inner hero with an epic journey.

In therapeutic activities to build their resilience, self-esteem and confidence, the children made friends and formed a clan to reclaim their personal castles. The activities included building sandcastles, making shields and banners for protection, going on a scavenger hunt to find useful materials and tools, as well as and learning how to train a dragon as their trusted sidekick.

After a good night’s sleep, the parent’s joined in the fun on Sunday at the beautiful surroundings of Glen Osmond Farm. A delicious BBQ lunch was provided and the day included a number of games such as sack races, egg and spoon race, musical statues. The parents enjoyed the time to connect with other mums and dads in their situation and share experiences in a lovely and relaxing environment.

The Very Special Kids Bereavement Support Program builds continuing links with families through providing a range of activities that aim to create a safe space to explore the impact of their child’s death.
